Maternity Telehealth Program Launched for New Moms
Expectant and new moms in Georgia can enjoy 24/7 support and consultations—from the comfort of their homes. This year, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS) of Georgia launched a maternity telehealth program for members on the State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP).
The Future Moms initiative now offers secure online visits with a certified lactation consultant, nurse, registered dietitian, or counselor, as well as various support programs. Mothers are encouraged to seek advice on a number of topics, such as prenatal care, prevention of pre-term labor, latching, milk production, nursing positions, nutrition while breastfeeding, formula feeding, and introducing solid foods. Appointments with nurse coaches can be scheduled for any day of the week, including evenings. The program is intended to supplement pre- and postnatal care from a physician or midwife.
When it comes to telemedicine, home health care is typically approached in the context of increasing access to care in rural underserved communities, managing chronic conditions, or both. We applaud the resourcefulness of the BCBS of GA in finding and filling a need with telemedicine for better outcomes—and for anxious mothers’ peace of mind.
